Chapter 20

The Key of Lies

I texted Bastien from the car to let him know I was bringing Becky-slash-Rebecca home with me, and that we had some things to discuss.

Ever the charmer, Bastien was ready with the sympathetic act as soon as we came through the door. Soon we gathered around the kitchen island with warm mugs of thick cocoa to sip on, and it was time to lay some cards on the table.

I just didn’t know exactly how to go about it.

“Becky…”

“Rebecca, if you don’t mind,” she replied gently, as if reminding a child.

My eyes cut swiftly to Bastien, who lifted an eyebrow but said nothing.

Okay, maybe we should start here.

“Why do you go by Rebecca sometimes, and Becky others?”

“I don’t know what you mean.” Her eyes remained focused on her cup.

“Well, when you introduced yourself to us at the coffee shop last week, you told us to call you Becky. Yesterday morning, you answered to Becky. But now it’s Rebecca. I’m just curious if there’s a reason it changes.”

Rebecca went very still, like an animal that just realized it was being hunted. Finally, she sighed. “I just… like it differently sometimes, I guess.” Her shoulders lifted and dropped in an elegant shrug. “Does it matter?”

Bastien’s eyes met mine over her head, and his head shook slightly. It’s not that important.

“No, I suppose not. But I do want to talk to you about what happened tonight. How are you, first off?”

She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, affecting an air of the tragic heroine. “I’m okay. It was a little shocking. But you seemed to know what to do,” she added, finally lifting her gleaming brown eyes to mine. “Does this happen to you often? Random men jumping out at you with a knife?”

If only you knew… I kept the sarcastic comment to myself and ignored her question.

“Did you recognize that man? Have you seen him before?”

She shook her head. “No, I don’t think so. I didn’t get a good look at his face, though.”

“So when he said he was here for the key and you said he couldn’t have it. What key did you think he was talking about?”

Rebecca was taking a sip when her cup began to shake. She set it on the counter with a light rattle and tried to conceal her nerves. “I said that? I don’t remember. It all happened so fast,” she laughed nervously, her eyes darting to Bastien for help.

“Yes, you did,” I answered firmly. “You knew what he was talking about. I want to trust you, but trust goes both ways. Right now I don’t feel like we have trust, but I think it’s clear we have a mutual problem. That man has attacked me before, and tonight he attacked you. I will tell you what he wants from me, if you share what he wants from you.”

Rebecca’s panicked eyes darted from me, to Bastien, and back. “I… I’m not supposed to tell anyone, ever,” she whispered.

My gaze met Bastien’s again over Rebecca’s head, and an unspoken question passed between us.
